Well that was a load of fireworks and, watching from my window, I have to admit it was pretty spectacular. A big chunk of the population obviously look forward to and enjoy this means of moving into a New Year and who am I to begrudge them this pleasure but….but….but am I right in thinking that the displays are getting bigger each year? Are we in danger of overkill? Should some of the colossal amount of money these displays are costing be used for more humanitarian causes such as……and this is where you come in. Fill in what you think could benefit for a bit more help. C’mon don’t expect me to do all the work. Join in.
My second New Year resolution is a joint venture with Pat. Once upon a time, pre Cancer, Covid and other ailments, we used to entertain quite frequently cooking special meals for family and friends. I would often, not always, do the cooking and devise new recipes and my piece de resistance was Steak a la Patricia which was the sister to Steak Diane (not the same but similar). We decided last year, 2024, we would not have a Christmas Turkey roast on Christmas day but I would cook this special meal instead, which I did. It was a success and we both enjoyed it so we have decided to make a special effort in 2025 by having what many people have now termed a ‘date evening’ by dressing for the occasion and I would cook a special meal, either one of my older recipes, or try some new ones. Isn’t that romantic? This will now happen on the first Wednesday of each month starting in February.
Although our Christmas Day meal was a success the preparation of it was not without some drama. I will explain.
One of the ingredients in this meal is crushed peppercorns and I have always used whole peppercorns and crushed them using a marble pestle and mortar bought for us as a present many years ago and which is the only time it ever gets used. To my horror I found that the pestle somehow had got broken and rather than wrestle with the pestle I would use the peppercorn grinder that we have also had for many years but has never grinded sufficiently for my purposes. Being a very resourceful and inventive sort of chap I popped down to the shed and found a light hammer, the head of which I wrapped in cling film, which I used on the comatose peppercorns to finish them off. This did not go quite to plan. Unfortunately not all the peppercorns were as comotose as I believed and I found that unless I had a direct hit on them they would ping off in all directions. Days later we are still finding peppercorns nestled in nooks and cranny’s all over the kitchen. Anyone know where I can find a mortarless pestle?
Keep watching it gets even better.
Now that I have completed my charity walk I have decided I will continue my ramblings, both physical and literary, and document these in a new blog called Terry and Pat's Travel. You can find this new blog here at https://outandabouttp25.blogspot.com/
